Ludacris and Jay Z attend 2005 MTV Video Music Awards at American Airlines Arena on August 28, 2005 in Miami, FL.
While on Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes’ All the Smoke podcast, Ludacris explained why Jay-Z said that having outlandish visuals came with a downside.
Jay-Z once gave Ludacris the real on his outlandish music videos. During an appearance on Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes’ All the Smoke podcast, the 45-year-old rapper-actor detailed a conversation he had with Hov about not getting his proper due as a lyricist.
“It was big, but there was a downside to it because even JAY-Z was one of the ones that said, you know, he don’t think I get the lyrical credit that I deserve because of the visuals,” Luda said.
“People ask me, ‘Why don’t you think [you] get the credit?’ Because I played too goddamn much, that’s what I do! And I wouldn’t have it any other way. That’s why my name is Ludacris, because it’s beyond crazy, it’s wild, it’s ridiculous.”
He added, “I like post-effects and augmenting reality, big-ass shoes with big-ass chains, and bobbleheads and all that. So I get it, I can’t be mad at it. I just have to show the multi-faceted aspects of myself and I actually love that.”

Luda, real name Christopher Bridges, has found success away from music, appearing in the legendary Fast & Furious franchise, and other films like End of the Road, John Henry, and the upcoming holiday movie Dashing Through the Snow. Bridges, who’s currently a supporting act on Janet Jackson’s Together Again Tour, was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier this month. Ludacris released his ninth and most recent album Ludaversal in 2015.
