Chance The Rapper Details Relationship with Kanye, Talks New Music, and More on 'The Joe Budden Podcast'

"The attention that he may be seeking is at the immediate detriment of some people that may need that attention more.”

Chance The Rapper is the latest contender on Spotify's The Joe Budden Podcast for a rare interview on the nearly three-hour program.

Once the welcome wagon finishes the opening pleasantries, the panel opens up to a candid, fiery, at times overly-thoughtful discussion on the merits of being an independent musician in the streaming era. Chance taking the corner of unflinching advocate for artistic ownership (specifically publishing and masters) and the titular host repeatedly attempting to poke holes in his self-ascribed label, Chance maintains an even and deeply informative tone, never hiding the plug.

Elsewhere in the chat, per Budden's constant prodding, Chance addresses the perpetual contradiction of being a fan and collaborator of Kanye West during the MAGA saga: "I think he does a lot of stuff for the attention of the masses, to get that stuff documented and made into history. But I think also a lot of times, the attention that he may be seeking is at the immediate detriment of some people that may need that attention more.”

Attempting to explain West's recent streak of destructive behavior, Chance adds: "I think Kanye has said it before, but I think he thinks like for every move, at least for the past few albums, he thinks about himself like 300 years in the future and how people will read things, and figures himself as trying to create a bigger blip on the long timeline where a lot of other people will be stuck in like a very small space of like where their art reaches or where their thoughts reach after they’ve died.”

He also offers an update on his collaborative project with West, clarifying that no work had he even begun on the project, but that he's been actively recording new music with Childish Gambino. No date for either project has been announced.
