After social media users have been discussing what an Erykah Badu vs. Lauryn Hill Instagram battle would like, it appears an official battle has been announced.
The latest Verzuz competition by Swizz Beats and Timbaland will feature Erykah Badu and Jill Scott going head for head. Recently Swizz and Timbaland have shared that they’d serve up females for their next pairing.
A few timeless albums by Badu, a Dallas, TX native include her debut Baduizm (1997), Mama’s Gun (2000) and New Amerykah Part Two: Return Of The Ankh (2010). Her artistry speaks for itself and tracks like “Window Seat,” “Out My Mind, Just In Time” make it apparent how instrumental her sound is even in this digital age. “On & On,” another classic single is another gem off her debut.
Jill Scott, a singer-songwriter hailing from Philadelphia is a massive voice within the neo-soul genre. Her debut album Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1 was also released in 2000. Over the years, she has continued to showcase her skillset and her superb vocals. Additional essential releases by Scott include Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 and Woman (2015). “The Way,” “A Long Walk” and “Golden” are a few of her staple singles.
It’d be a lie if anyone ever tried to say Erykah Badu and Jill Scott’s influence isn’t heard in today’s artists' music, especially within the R&B genre. Most recently, Badu shared that she’d be “pulverized” if she was up against Lauryn Hill who only has one solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. As a fan of Badu, my hot take is that she’d actually win against Hill.
The Erykah Badu vs. Jill Scott Verzuz battle is slated for May 9 at 7 p.m. EST.
