J. Cole Searched "J. Cole Type Beat" on YouTube & Recorded This Track
After collaborating on singles with BIA, Smino and more last year, J. Cole returns with new single "Procrastination (Broke)."
It appears that the rumors of a forthcoming J. Cole album are true. On Wednesday (January 18), the Dreamville Records founder released surprise single "Procrastination (Broke)" as a “thank you” to producer Bvtman and “every producer out there cooking up and sharing their work with the world.”
A text message, presumably from Cole, says that the North Carolina native was struggling to find inspiration before he went to YouTube and searched "J. Cole type beat." Being directed to Bvtman's channel, the rapper heard the "Procrastination" beat, got out of his creative rut and began writing. Last year, Cole assisted on singles from BIA ("London"), Smino ("90 Proof"), YG and Moneybagg Yo ("Scared Money"), and Benny The Butcher ("Johnny P's Caddy"). "Procrastination" also comes over a year after Cole's last solo album, The Off-Season, which went on to be nominated for Best Rap Album at the 64th Grammy Awards.
“It’s a million artists out there right now just like me, hungry and searching every day for something to spark a word, a melody, a hook, a verse, a punchline, a way to vent, or a way to cut through,” the message reads. “On a day when I couldn’t find much motivation, I was looking for anything to inspire me. Out of curiosity, I typed in ‘J. Cole type beat’ into YouTube. Yours was the first I saw. I pressed play, focused, and wrote this.”
Cole's text concluded, “This is some shit that would normally stay in the vault, but I don’t want to hold onto the music like that no more. This is for you and whoever else need to hear it. God bless bro and keep doing what you do!”
