Jazmine Sullivan's Masterpiece 'Heaux Tales' Wins Best R&B Album Grammy

Jazmine Sullivan says Heaux Tales "was a safe space for Black women to tell their stories" during her Grammy Award acceptance speech.

Jazmine Sullivan’s Heax Tales was a moment. And tonight it won Best R&B Album at the 2022 Grammy Awards. 

It goes without saying that Sullivan’s project was one of the most well-written releases to hit streaming platforms last year. Heaux Tales was a masterpiece, but it was also an honest album that once again pushed Jazmine to the forefront of the R&B conversation. She excavated her feelings on love, heartbreak, and other emotional topics and gave us Heaux Tales, arguably the best R&B album of the year. 

During her acceptance speech, she shared that she wrote the project to deal with her own shame and unforgiveness around decisions she made in her twenties that she called unfavorable. She added: “What it ended up being was a safe space for Black women to tell their stories, for us to learn from each other, laugh with each other, and not be exploited at the same time. That’s what I’m most grateful for.”

Jazmine also expressed gratitude for the writers and producers who helped her put together the entirety of the album. Sullivan battled against the following in this stacked category: Snoh Aalegra (Temporary Highs in the Violet Skies), Jon Batiste (We Are), Leon Bridges (Gold-Diggers Sound), and H.E.R. (Back of My Mind).

Sullivan was also nominated for Best R&B Performance ("Pick Up Your Feelings,") she tied with Silk Sonic ("Leave The Door Open.")
