Mariah Carey Brings 'All I Want For Christmas' Into the New Year At No. 1
The holidays are over, but 1994 Mariah Carey hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You" marks 2023's first No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100.
The undisputed Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey, has taken over the New Year. On the latest Billboard Hot 100 chart, dated January 7 – which tracks the week from from December 23 to 29 – Carey's 1994 hit "All I Want for Christmas" has nabbed the No. 1 spot, followed by other classics from the holiday season. This means that the five-time Grammy Award winner has the first No. 1 song of 2023. "All I Want for Christmas" also makes the first song to be No. 1 in five separate years, (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023).

The singer-songwriter has extended her record for most distinct years having a song rank on the top of the Hot 100 with 19: 1990 to 2000, 2005 to 2006, 2008, and 2019 to 2023. Carey also ties with "One Sweet Day" collaborators Boyz II Men as the only other artist to have three songs top the Hot 100 for at least 12 weeks: Her and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” (16 weeks), “We Belong Together” (14 weeks), and now, “All I Want for Christmas” (12 weeks so far).
Despite her latest achievement, Carey recently feuded with former co-songwriter Walter Afanasieff over the credits for "Christmas," as Afansieff claimed that Carey didn't come up with the song's concept as a child.
“She started to hint at the fact that, ‘Oh, I wrote that song when I was a little girl.’ But why weren’t you saying that for 12 or 13 or 15 years prior to that? So it just sort of developed in her mind,” he said on podcast Hot Takes & Deep Dives.
