Medical Examiner Determines Cause of Death for Shock G
The Digital Underground frontman passed on April 22, 2021.
Approaching two months since Shock G was found dead unresponsive in his Tampa hotel room, a cause of death has been revealed.
According to TMZ, a Hillsborough County medical examiner has determined the Digital Underground founder and frontman accidentally overdosed on a fatal combination of methamphetamine, fentanyl, and alcohol. Born Gregory Jacobs, the producer, singer, and rapper, was found unresponsive on April 22nd by a hotel manager, who went up to his room out of concern when Jacobs missed his checkout time. Per the medical examiner's initial report, no signs of outward trauma were discovered. The Hillsborough ME pronounced Jacobs dead later that afternoon. He was 57-years-old.
In the hours after his death was announced, fans and peers of Shock G flooded socials with commemorative posts and memorials. "34 years ago almost to the day we had a wild idea we can be a hip hop band and take on the world through it all the dream became a reality and the reality became a nightmare for some. And now he’s awaken from the fame," wrote Digital Underground co-founder, Chopmaster J, in an Instagram post. "I look back [on my times with Shock G] with the greatest fondness. Those were like some of the best times of my life," reads a post from Tupac's official Twitter account.
A funeral service for Jacobs was held on May 1st with family, friends, and collaborators. It featured tributes from Busta Rhymes, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Chuck D, and, Tupac's brother, Mopreme Shakur.
