Melanie Fiona Details First Encounters with Prince and Kanye on Talib Kweli's 'People's Party' Podcast
The singer recalls lessons learned from Kanye and The Purple One in an excerpt from the next episode of People's Party.
Melanie Fiona is the latest guest on an upcoming episode of Talib Kweli's People's Party podcast. In a clip from their upcoming session, the venerable r&b singer details her time on the road with Kanye West (sharing the stage for a handful of stops on 2007's Glow in The Dark tour) and a chance encounter with Prince at a BET party.
Of the Chicago rapper, Fiona recalls a moment backstage when West praised her performance and reminded her to "never be afraid to do what it takes to have people remember you," a virtue consistent with the rapper's headline-making in the 13-years since. With the late Purple One, Fiona recalls a night she performed just after learning Prince was in the crowd. Already nervous and questioning the quality of her set, the icon floated to her table at the conclusion of the performance and warmly remarked, "I had no idea."

Kweli noted his exchange with Prince wasn't quite as cordial. The BK MC happened to be DJing the very same event and Prince wasn't thrilled with his Top 40 selections. According to Kweli, Prince walked up to the booth and exclaimed, "I did not put on this outfit to be cursed at by rappers." Kweli also revealed that when he proposed a collaboration, Prince's unmatched pettiness was on full-glow, snapping back with "Let me know when you get off Warner Bros."
