The Weeknd Accused of Stealing "Starboy" in $5 Million Lawsuit

In a $5 million lawsuit, Somali-American artist and activist, Yasminah claims The Weeknd copied her 2009 song “Jewel of My Life (Hooyo)” for one of his biggest his, the 2016 "Starboy."

According to documents obtained by The Blast, The Weeknd has been accused of stealing the beat from Yasminah, who claims he knew about her because they both share East African roots and "Hooyah" became a big hit in the East African community across the diaspora. The Weeknd, born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, is of Ethiopian descent.

Yasminah says she hired a lawyer to address this in the past and had allegedly reached a settlement, but claims her label kept the money.

She's filed a $5 million dollar plagiarism lawsuit now, and is going after The Weeknd, Daft Punk and Republic Records for their involvement in the production of "Starboy."

According to a report inTMZ, blog posts have been written describing the similarities between the songs, including thousands of comments on said posts agreeing with Yasminah's claim that both songs share similar hooks, the same key, and tempo.

The Weeknd's team has not released a statement addressing the suit yet.
