The Weeknd won awards for Video of the Year and Best R&B. During both of his speeches, he demanded justice for Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor.
Platinum-selling singer The Weeknd opened up the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards. The singer performed “Blinding Lights,” the second single from his After Hours album, which dropped in March.
The Weeknd sang on top of the Edge building at Hudson Yards. (For people who aren't from New York City, Hudson Yards is a new development in the Chelsea and Hudson Yards neighborhoods of Manhattan.)
The singer gave a very glitzy performance, which finished off with a lavish fireworks show. (Apparently, the performance wasrecorded last week.) He was also wearing makeup as if his face was bruised.
The Weeknd came into the night with six nominations: Artist of the Year, Video of the Year, Best R&B, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing, which was all for “Blinding Lights.”
The Weeknd won the Best R&B award, beating out Chloe x Halle, H.E.R., Khalid, Alicia Keys, and Lizzo. And he won the Video of the Year. During both of his speeches, The Weeknd said "Justice for Jacob Blake and Justice for Breonna Taylor."

The singer is having an excellent year. His latest album, After Hours, earned the year’s biggest debut week upon its release.(That has since been dwarfed by Juice Wrld's massive posthumous release.) The album racked up 221 million streams and sold 275,000 physical copies.
The latest single from the album is “Snowchild,” which features an animated video. The video was directed by D’Art Shtajio studios. The company is the first Black-owned studio in Japan.
