Okayafrica Video: Beat Making Lab x PBS [Episode 1: Congo]
The team behind the Beat Making Lab project from UNC Chapel Hill have partnered up with PBS Digital Studios to launch a weekly video series chronicling the Lab's production workshops for youth in developing countries. If you're not familiar with the project, UNC professors/producers/MCs Apple Juice Kid and Pierce Freelon started the international side of the Lab out of an existing beat-making course being taught at the University. Wanting to bring a similar course to youth in other parts of the world, the duo joined forces with non-profit groups to build Labs in four host countries, leading youth in a crash course on electronic and hip-hop production. Our partners-in-crime at Okayafrica have the first episode of the series, which takes place in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo and explains the project in more depth.
