Apollo Brown Shares The Moody, Back Alley Joint "Triple Beams" ft. Westside Gunn & Planet Asia
One of the Midwest's best, Apollo Brown is gearing up for the release of his brand new Grandeur LP on September 25th. And as a way to prime the pump, the Michigan production phenom has just shared a new track, "Triple Beams," which features the vocal talents of both Westside Gunn and Planet Asia. This one is pure back-alley, dark city night espionage, thanks in no small part to Brown's simple and deep-booming beat, which utilizes chopped-up Rhodes chords and moody female vocals. It's the soundtrack to a mob hit from the most stylish nightmare you've ever had.
Keen sample and soul heads will recognize Apollo Brown's chosen flip as Wendy Rene's "After Laughter," which, as our good friends at Mass Appeal point out, was also used to great effect on The Wu-Tang Clan's "Tearz." Brown's use of the sample is a bit more minimalist and calm, though, and invites the listener in to a world marred by deceit and doom. It's a lovely thing.
Listen to "Triple Beams" below and pre-order yourself a copy of Grandeur, which features a murder's row of guest appearances including Freddie Gibbs, Oddisee, Your Old Droog, Ras Kass, Sean Price, Red Pill, OC and Masta Ace. So yeah, you're gonna want to cop this one.
