In a report from Deadline, DuVernay is set to direct and produce and documentary on Nipsey for Netflix. The report goes on to say that "the project was secured by Netflix after an intense bidding war," and that the streaming service is rumored to have purchased the film for "high eight figures."

The report adds that Nipsey's estate reached out to DuVernay directly based on their admiration for her work.

The director had previously included Nipsey's music in her Netflix miniseries When They See Us.

"For WHEN THEY SEE US, I wanted Nipsey’s voice to blanket the end credits and close the five-hour film," she tweeted. "His estate gave me approval during a very hard time for them, with no monetary gain, just two weeks after his passing. A massive gift. Forever grateful."

Nipsey was fatally shot outside of his Marathon Clothing Store located in Los Angeles on March 31, 2019. He had previously accumulated success as an independent artist and also was an advocate for youth interested in the tech industry.
