Black Thought & The Roots Help NYC Bid Farewell To Derek Jeter
If you've been anywhere in New York, read anything, heard anything over the past few weeks, you already know that the city's having a tough time letting go of its shoe-in hall-of-famer Derek Jeter. The legendary shortstop just put the cap on a 20-year career in the Majors, sporting the blue and white pin stripes for the entirety of it; a rare act of devotion in a league full of contract sharks. After two decades in uniform, a city that doesn't take its sporting culture too lightly had a tough time figuring out how to say goodbye to the team's all-time hit leader and spiritual center.
Enter Black Thought and The Roots and the group's triumphant 2009 single "The Fire," an uplifting and triumphant sonic accompaniment to the city's farewell. Tariq praises the man, who never left his city behind, no matter how outlandish the offer; the stamp of a true mensch (for those of us observing the new year). Bid Derek Jeter adieu with the mighty Roots crew and Black Thought on VO duties. Watch the fellas' heartfelt farewell to the legend and Jeter's own touching send-off below.
