Remember the first time you heard De La Soul's drums? A Tribe Called Quest's chord chops? The awesome cackle of Busta Rhymes in his prime? Those sonic moments, brought to you be the collective we all know as Native Tongues, are treasured by every hip-hop fan alive. They deserve proper tribute--and that's exactly what's about to go down.
DJ Raydar Ellis and Okayplayer's own Cali Green have been hard at work this summer, planning out and now executing their Mixography: The Collectives series, a set of live events and mixtape releases meant to make a present space for past greats. Up next: Native Tongues. Okayplayer is very proud to present the world premiere of their newest mixtape, a 25-track journey through the catalogs of ATCQ, De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah and more.
But more important than the mix is the get-down, and Raydar and Cali have NYC covered with a party at Le Poisson Rouge's Gallery on Thursday, August 27th. Ellis will be on hand spinning, you guessed it, plenty of Native Tongues joints, and you can bet a great many of his crate-digging cronies will be in the building as well. Tickets can be picked up here, and if you purchase your spot online in advance, you'll get one free drink before 11 p.m. Beverages, beloved friends and some of the most artful hip-hop ever made; don't even try to pretend you've got better plans. We'll see you there.
