'Black Dynamite' Writer Carl Jones Discusses The Forthcoming Musical Special 'The Wizard Of Watts'

Carl JonesBlack Dynamite has long been a haven for the type of biting, socially sharp satire that's been almost entirely absent from the comedic world at large since The Boondocks lost its heart all those years ago. The forthcoming Jones-helmed BD musical special The Wizard Of Watts promises to take those strides even farther, providing a fictional account of its pimpadelic kung-fu king's fairy tale-ish voyage to the land of Watts, where kevlar-clad pigs roam the streets terrorizing innocent black men, women and children AKA "The Rodney Munchkings" of Oz-Watts.

In a recent profile from The New York TimesJones was asked to comment on the forthcoming late-night spectacular (which will star a few Okayplayer favorites in Erykah Badu,  JB Smoove and Tyler The Creator) and how it came together at such a crucial time in the police brutality epidemic that's been sweeping the country. The piece shines some light on his not-so-humble beginnings as a producer on Aaron McGruder's The Boondocks and how Black Dynamite carries the torch, with Jones claiming "Basically, I set out to create a blacker version of ‘The Wiz’ and this is how it ended up.”

Though BD maybe getting it's first Vaudevillian treatment, Jones is certainly no stranger to the platform. Some of you may recall Adult Swim's last musical special Freaknik-- starring T-Pain oddly enough -- where Jones told the long-overdue allegory of ATL's own Festivus. If you're not familiar, go check that out. And if you're teeming with excitement for this weekend's special like the rest of us, just hold tight. It won't be much longer now. Black Dynamite's musical special on police brutality in the land of Oz-Watts will be airing this Saturday night on Adult Swim at 10:30pm.
