Chromeo + Blood Orange: The Perfect Funk Collab That Almost Was
Montreal-bred funkateers Chromeo have a history of top-notch collaborations, and from the looks of things their fast-approach studio LP White Women is going to keep a damn good thing going. Solange Knowles, Toro y Moi and Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig are all featured on the record, which is due out May 12th. But word just came today of the duo's ultimately failed efforts to connect in the studio with Blood Orange AKA Dev Hynes and now it's got us daydreaming of the smooth sonic perfection that could have been.
Dave-1told DIY Weekly that logistics kept Hynes from joining in on the White Women sessions, but left the door open for a future collab. "He was supposed to be on the record. We talked about it but we could never get our schedules to align. We're gonna do s**t with him," Dave said.
Blood Orange's impact on the funk world has been undeniable--a fact that touring vets like Chromeo know all too well. "I really think Dev is doing everyone a huge favor by not going on tour," Dave went on to say. "[B]ecause if he went on tour full-time he would be ending so many people's careers, including ours. So thank you, Dev, seriously. I would basically be his guitar tech if he ended up going on tour!"
While at least for now Hynes is taking time off, Chromeo has been blowing up the spot in preparation for their first studio release in nearly four years. We've already been gifted with four singles and two videos off of White Women, and the band's international "Come Alive" tour is already in full swing. Still, damn. What a beautiful thing it would have been to hear Dev croon over their on-point retro Québécois funk. Read the Full Interview Here (via DIY) and scope Blood Orange's career-slaying live sound below.
