Confederate Flag Flyers With Cotton Found On American University Campus

Confederate flag flyers with phrases "Huzzah for Dixie" and "I wish I was in the land of cotton," accompanied with pieces of cotton were found throughout the American University campus.

According to AU's student newspaper, the Eagle, a white man wearing an orange hard hat and camouflage pants allegedly put up the flyers on the same night that Ibram X. Kendi, founder of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at AU, presented his plans for the new center.

"AU is committed to the vision of the Center and Dr. Kendi's work and we will not be deterred by this cowardly attempt at intimidation," Fanta Aw, vice president of campus life, said.

"I ask you to join me in standing together and show that we will not be intimidated," AU President Sylvia Burwell, added. "AU will respond strongly to attempts designed to harm and create fear. Instead, we will recommit to creating a community that does not stand by. When one of us is attacked, all of us are attacked."

The 10 flyers were found hanging in four buildings, including on a bulletin board outside the Center for Diversity and Inclusion and beneath a Center for Israel Studies sign. Following the incident, a crime alert was released offering details about the alleged perpetrator.

Earlier this year Andrew Anglin, neo-Nazi leader and founder of popular white supremacist website the Daily Stormer, started a campaign to harass AU's first black female student body president, Taylor Dumpson. Around the time Dumpson began her tenure, bananas hanging from nooses began to appear on campus. To make matters worse the letters "AKA" were scrawled on the fruit, which is in reference to Dumpson being a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the oldest black sorority, founded in 1908 at Howard University, as well as "Harambe Bait" written on them too.
