De La Soul & Kaytranada Step Into 'Sway's Universe' To Speak On The Value Of Originality
I think we can all agree that De La Soul is amongst the most influential hip-hop groups to have ever walked across this blue marble. Their sense of rhythm, wordplay and style made them an indispensable component to the the culture's adolescence, breaking ground by breaking free of any conventional mold for what a group of artists operating within hip-hop's space could or should be.
Perhaps one of their most overlooked revolutions (amongst countless) is how they busted down the door for cross-genre touring by opening for acts as diverse and non-hip-hop as Fine Young Cannibals and Bob Dylan, proving an uncanny ability to flip from folk to funk in the drop of a mic. Recently, the daisy age trio took to Sway's Universe to chop it up with Mr. Calloway, while 2016 MVP, Kaytranada (who's opening slot for Madonna would simply not be possible without the work of De La,) played fly on the wall. Topics discussed include early influence derived from NWA's legendary live shows, as well as just how invaluable originality is to the proliferation of an artist's sound.
Elsewhere in the interview they discuss De La's forthcoming And The Anonymous Nobody... LP (their ninth studio album,) ensuring us all that it will be well worth the wait. Watch as De La Soul and Kaytranada step into Sway's Universe down below. Pre-order your copy of the new album on iTunes today.
