Ryan Reynolds Announces Marvel Studios is Shooting Deadpool 3
Fans were concerned over the future of the franchise after Disney purchased Fox.
Christmas came a little early for Deadpool fans. Ryan Reynolds, the star and producer of the franchise, stopped by Live with Kelly and Ryan on Christmas Eve. During the interview, he confirmed that the studios have greenlit a third installment of the Deadpool franchise.
"We're working on [Deadpool 3] right now with the whole team," he said. "We're over at Marvel now, which is like the big leagues all of a sudden. It's kinda crazy. So yeah, we're working on it."
The first installment, in 2016, was the rare R-rated superhero movie. The PG-13 Deadpool 2 received less than favorable reviews, yet still scored an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced that Deadpool could stay rated-R after its move to Disney back in 2017.
"[Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded," he said on a media call. "But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool. As long as we let the audiences know what's coming, we think we can manage that fine."
The 2016 movie became the top-grossing X-Men movie ever, scoring $783 million worldwide. Atlanta star Zazie Beetz joined the cast for the sequel. At one point, Atlanta creator Donald Glover was set to be co-creating a Deadpool animated series with his brother Stephen for FXX. However, FX Networks announced the two parties had parted ways in late March 2018.
