Mixtape Mondays: Trinidad Senolia Premiere New Deep House Mix, Combat Jack's Larry Levan Tribute, Afro House + More
This morning we are rolling in the deep on Mixtape Monday--deep house, to be specific. Two of our favorite selectors, Garth Trinidad and Mateo Senolia--collectively known as Trinidad-Senolia--come true with the debut of their new mix Deep Wood Stomp in this Okayplayer exclusive premiere. We also have Afro House from DJ Jay Lopes and Combat Jack and Francis Chiser's eclectic Larry Levan tribute mix of mid-80s club classics. Plus we'll be dropping in more of the best mixes of house, hip-hop, soul and reggae that the web has to offer. Click through to let the soundtrack your week begin...
If Trinidad-Senolia sounds like a soundsystem for audiophiles, it is. Garth Trinidad and Mateo Senolia have both made their name with their willingness to go deeper in their selections but we are extremely proud to premiere Deep Wood Stomp--the deepest of all possible deep house mixes. The blend is something they put together especially for us and represents a micro-genre the scientists are referring to as 'okaydeep'. Press play below to see how deep you can get:
Mixtape-spotter par excellence DJ Umb over at Generation Bass put us up on two excellent mixes with a Lusophone lean to them. One is an excellent Afro House mix from Jay Lopes that segues nicely our of our Trinidad-Senolia segment but with Portuguese hooks and subtle coupe/kuduro/zouk rhthms that'll set you up nicely for the kizomba mix (also Jay Lopes) they threw in as a bonus). Stream the house mix below and hit GB for the other mix if you kizomba.
Combat Jack has established himself as one of the rap game's most compelling interviewers--largely because he was able to parlay the deep rolodex he compiled as one of the rap game's most prolific lawyers into an impressive roster of guests, from Dame Dash to Busta Rhymes. Now he seems to be parlaying his parlay into a tertiary role as a selector and if this Larry Levan tribute he put together with Francis Chiser is any indication--he might be the best-ish at that, too. Listen below and scroll down for the tracklist of eclectic classics.

The almighty, all-knowing roots, reggae, dub, and dancehall sound selectors at NYC's Deadly Dragon put on one burner after another this summer, and thankfully the audio evidence of at least one such party has survived. True to Deadly Dragon's reputation as one of the world's top shops, the mix is a dynamite cross-section of island stylings past and present, rare and renowned. This one hit the decks in Brooklyn back in July at Deadly's ROOTS OF SOUND SYSTEM Pt.4: TRIBUTE TO STUDIO 1 party, which featured Jah Wise, Downbeat The Ruler, Carlton Livingstone, Ranking Joe and Screechy Dan. and if you close your eyes you can easily feel the hot city night swaying out from your speakers with each echo of dub-drenched reverb.

True to his own cinematic, dusty-sunlight-on-the-desert-roadway sound, Tycho's latest DJ mix is something transportive and special. The musician--real name Scott Hansen--crafted this "Black Sunrise" set exclusively for last month's Burning Man festival and reportedly began playing at 5:40 a.m., just as the sun crept over the Nevada horizon. Loaded with gems from Boards of Canada, Bibio, Little Dragon and his own Tycho tracks, Hansen's mix sounds sublime from just about any listening location; one can only imagine what it was like out on that arid early morning.

There's no denying that summertime and mixtapes go together. We did our best to prove that point, but you don't have to take our word for it. The good head Kinky Electric Noise did his best to bring back the warm weather with his AfroLatinBeatz Sunset Mix, a nonstop meltdown of some of the finest world groove material this side of of the Afrika Shrine. Texan funk family Brownout is well-represented, as is percussion legend Tito Puente. A dance-ready affair that's guaranteed to get Lagos, London, Brooklyn and Buenos Aires all bumping, Kinky Electric Noise has us believing that summer can be a yearlong state of mind. See you on the beach.

The good work that LeFtO puts in is nigh-legendary in the Mixtape Mondays archives. Somehow each mix seems more on point than the last, and now the Brussels brainiac is back with some of the best of what's new in the beat-driven world. You'll find the already-legendary FlyLo x K.Dot cut the twisted new iteration of Toro Y Moi. It's all pruned and remolded by LeFtO's sharp production skills--worth the listen for his inventive chops and cuts alone. Most importantly, though, the set features a fresh world exclusive from The Gaslamp Killer's newest project!

Fader has been doing us all the kindest of deeds this year, publishing weekly mixes from the minds of musicians on the cutting edge of production, beatmaking, and technological composition. Their newest installment features samplings from UK producer Matt Cutler, aka Lone. The young mingler of hip-hop and techno tropes doesn't shy away from the heavy hitters like Joey Bada$$ and the classic sheen of Viola Wills. Culter told Fader "The vibe of this one, I guess, is more a listening thing... sort of like a mini radio show. I wanted it to be a nice little snapshot of some of the tunes I'm listening to a lot." It's a beautiful little snapshot indeed.

Viola Wills - "Dare To Dream"
Joey Bada$$ - Two Lips"
Blackmoon - "Who Got The Props?"
Lenny White - "I'll See You Soon"
