DJ Premier on The Roots for Okayplayer TV
DJ Premier, as is commonly known, is a thorough dude. Questlove--in his new memoir Mo' Meta Blues, sets the stage for a beathead's wet dream when he shares an anecdote about the time Premier came in the studio during the recording of D'Angelo's Voodoo, to lay down his scratches for "Devil's Pie." Questo relates finding himself at a loose end with Primo, J Dilla and D (while Q-Tip was in the other room), sharing beats in progress for the approval of the group; hearing new tracks from Slum Village and M.O.P. in their formative stages and getting a master class in the nod factor by pushing himself to get the proper reaction from that august body of all-star beatmakers. In this Okayplayer TV interview (shot backstage at Roots Picnic 2013) Premier returns the favor, noting his longtime friendship with--and admiration for-- Black Thought and Questo, rating Thought's voice and flow (no idle words, coming from the man who produced "Mostly Tha Voice") and revealing that Questlove was an early supporter of his group the NYGz. Pretty much anything this man says is a hip-hop quotable so pay attention when he deigns to speak his clout. Get out your pens and notepads and hit play below to collect your jewels:
