Family Of Eric Garner Shares "I Can't Breathe" Rap Tribute
Days ahead of the two-year anniversary of the killing of Eric Garner, the family of the Staten Island man murdered by law enforcement officers, shares the rap tribute
"I Can't Breathe." The memorial track takes its title from Garner's last words - a phrase he repeated on July 17, 2014 as police restrained him with a deadly chokehold. Garner was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The words "I Can't Breathe" have since become a rallying cry for many of the peaceful protests across the United States as citizens speak out against police brutality and gun violence. The recording made by Garner's family is a poignant and unfortunately timely reminder of historically tenuous relations between police and communities of color. It is also an emphatic statement of the very real pain that systemic violence inflicts. Click the track below to listen to "I Can't Breathe." RIP Eric Garner.
