Former Minnesota Cop Will Be Charged In Fatal Shooting of Daunte Wright

Over the past few days following Daunte Wright’s violent death, hundreds of protestors have shown up to the doors of the Brooklyn Center Police Department. Each night they’ve been met by Minnesota National Guard Members and State Patrol troopers.

The white Minnesota officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright will be charged with second-degree manslaughter.

According to a New York Times report, Kimberly A. Porter who has since resigned from the Brooklyn Center Police Department alongside the chief on Tuesday was arrested on Wednesday morning and she will be charged later in the day. If convicted she could face 10 years in prison. 

Immediately following the incident, Porter who is a 26-year veteran on the force alleged she warned him she would use her Taser on him during a traffic stop with other officers. 

Per NPR, officials say that after Wright was pulled over officers “discovered an outstanding warrant stemming from misdemeanor charges and attempted arrest.” After attempting to arrest him, Wright reportedly twisted away and got back into this vehicle. This was when Porter claims she yelled “Taser” three times. Rather than using her Taser, Porter’s handgun was used and she shot him three times in the chest, killing him. 

Wright died at the scene. In body-cam footage that was released this week she said, “I just shot him.”

Over the past few days following Wright’s violent death, hundreds of protestors have shown up to the doors of the Brooklyn Center Police Department. Each night they’ve been met by Minnesota National Guard Members and State Patrol troopers. Tear gas, rubber bullets, and other objects have been fired into the crowds of protestors. On Tuesday night, officers reportedly arrested 79 people.

Wright’s family has called for justice amid the death of the 20-year-old who was also a father. The investigation is currently ongoing.
