Freestyle The Art of Rhyme Pass The Popcorn Mos Def
Feast your eyes on Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme, a classic hip-hop documentary from DJ Organic (aka Kevin Fitzergerald) showcasing the skilled talent behind the music we love. Coming to you in its second iteration, the film comprises the perfect series of images to capture the mastery required of the most mesmerizing spitters to rhyme off the top and features favorites like Black Thought, Mos Def (when he was still Mos Def), The Last Poets, and Pharoahe Monch and tons of lesser known rhymers that never made it to the big time.
If you're looking for tons of rare footage of early freestyles and a new angle into hip-hop history, The Art of Rhyme is not to be missed. After making the rounds on the film festival circuit (and picking up several notable awards), a new trailer for the film was just released that you can check out below. The full feature will be available on iTunes starting July 2 and if you're in New York, check out thescreening at The Nuyorican Poets Café on July 18. It's making a small tour this summer, so peep the website for other cities as well. Wherever you watch it, open your ears to catch the sure-to-be insidious rhymes. And pass the popcorn.
