Gary Clark Jr Takes Us To "Church" In His Soaring & Soulful New Video
If you're like us, you spent the weekend with Gary Clark Jr's deeply soulful new LP The Story of Sonny Boy Slim, a record that has the Austin-bred blues guitarist opening up into new genres and producing some of his most lovely and layered material to date. Now, Clark has shared a new music video for one of the album's most-folksy cuts; it's "Church," which features Clark strumming a dreadnaught acoustic and belting out weary harmonica lines. You can practically smell the Americana in the air.
The clip was directed by legendary photographer and filmmaker Danny Clinch and features Clark's own sisters in supporting roles. "I grew up, me and my little sisters, singing gospel music as well as everything else," Clark told NPR, who premiered the video Monday."I think when you are having moments to reflect on challenges in your life or weariness, my folks always taught us to look for spiritual strength. Part of this [is from] a chapter of my life, thinking about where I came from and where I want to go."
"Music is medicine to me. I don't go to church, but when I was trying to figure out my way as a young man, I was listening to albums," Clark told NPR in a past interview. The 31-year-old will be on tour throughout most of the next eight months in support of Sonny Boy Slim, and we strongly suggest you catch him in the live act. Few instrumentalists can match his mastery and raw, awe-inspiring emotion. Watch the video for "Church" below and pick up his new LP in iTunes today.
