Over the weekend, BBC Radio figurehead Gilles Peterson shared a new installment of his regular program, although this week's edition was anything but regular. After playing a solemn and timely tribute to late jazz great Ornette Coleman, Peterson veered into a dedicated "Bilal segment" of his program--during which he shared a brand new track produced by Adrian Younge featuring Kendrick Lamar.

Entitled "Money over Love," the track was previewed by Bilal and Lamar last month in Los Angeles, but this appears to be the first time the studio cut has been played in public--quite the exclusive get for Peterson. Bilal shares the story of how he likes to write in a nice, soothing place if possible, and called Kendrick an "incredible, incredible creative talent. A driven person...from the whole school of Dre just staying in the studio for hours and hours."

"Money Over Love" is an uptempo psych-funk track reminiscent of 70s blaxploitation films, filled with swirling organs and many different Bilals, overdubbed atop one another. At its core, the track is a twisted affirmation that the best things in life aren't free, and the blistering vintage soul in which it's packaged...well, that's something else entirely. Kendrick's flow enters after the song's first hook and never lets up, rat-a-tat mutilating Younge's beat and affirming that when it comes to speed, few can keep with Lamar.

Listen to the mix here, via the BBC. "Money Over Love" begins at roughly the 2:15:30 mark.
