GloRilla Faces Lawsuit from New Orleans Rapper For Unauthorized Sampling on “Tomorrow”

New Orleans rapper Ivory “Mobo Joe” Paynes has accused GloRilla of sampling the Dog House Posse song “Street of the Westbank” on “Tomorrow” and “Tomorrow 2.”

GloRilla has a lawsuit on her hands. New Orleans rap pioneer Ivory “Mobo Joe” Paynes of Dog House Posse has named the Memphis rapper in a new lawsuit, claiming that her songs “Tomorrow” and “Tomorrow 2” used an unauthorized sample of the Posse’s 1994 song “Street of the Westbank.”

Paynes says that Big Glo and producer Macaroni Toni didn’t ask for permission to sample “Street of Westbank.” Paynes also tweeted a clip of the Cardi B-assisted “Tomorrow 2” video last month over a snippet of “Street of  Westbank.”

Paynes claims that “Tomorrow” and “Tomorrow 2” use a few elements from the ‘94 track, including “musical arrangements, percussion tracks, synthesized orchestration, including but not limited to piano, cello, violin, contrabass, and drum set, and tone and melody,” per Billboard.

The lawsuit goes on to suggest that the songs “mimic and copy the arrangement of ‘Street of Westbank’ by the choice of the instrumentation accompanying the rap lyrics, the choice of when the instruments drop out and reenter and what instruments drop in and reenter.” Paynes recently appeared on podcast B High ATL, where the rapper revealed that he learned about the alleged “Street of Westbank” sampling via text message.

“Tomorrow 2” peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and appeared on Glo’s 2022 EP Anyways, Life's Great.... Cardi B and Glo performed the song live at the American Music Awards last November. Both rappers were also nominated in the Favorite Female Hip-Hop Artist category at the AMAs, although Nicki Minaj would take home the trophy.
