Harriet Tubman Is An Axe-Wielding Abolitionist In New 'Underground' Trailer

The second season of Underground now has a premiere date, and with that has come a new teaser that highlights one of the more notable characters appearing in the series — Harriet Tubman.

The 30 second trailer begins with the last big moment from the first season, in which Tubman (portrayed by Aisha Hinds) comes to main protagonist Rosalee's rescue.

From there we get to see Tubman in action as an axe wielding abolitionist fighting for freedom. According to a press release from the WGN network, season two is "set in the aftermath of the Macon 7's daring attempt to stage the greatest escape in history, this group of American heroes continues on their harrowing journey to freedom, with legendary abolitionist Harriet Tubman blazing the trail." The season will be premiering on Wednesday, March 8, 2017.

Alongside Tubman, another important historical figure within the fight against slavery will also be introduced in the second season — Frederick Douglass. The iconic orator and author will be portrayed by John Legend (who also serves as the executive producer for Underground).

Legend is also working on another series for WGN titled Black Wall Street. The show will tell the story of Black Wall Street, a wealthy black neighborhood in Greenwood, Tulsa that was attacked in 1921 by a mob of angry whites who burned it down, and massacred hundreds of black residents over two days.

The show will examine how Black Wall Street and the community around its creation became a safe haven even at a time of deep segregation. It will also examine the backlash that the community faced over the course of the two day rampage.

"We're so excited to continue to grow our relationship with WGN America," Mike Jackson, who is a part of Legend's production team Get Lifted Company, told Deadline. "Our experience working with them on Underground has been fantastic. Additionally, we’re looking forward to working with our friend Tika Sumpter to help tell this incredible story that many people know nothing about."
