Ice Cube to Executive Produce MTV's "Celebrity Deathmatch" Reboot
"Celebrity Deathmatch" returns.
MTV is brining back its popular Celebrity Deathmatch series. According to a press release in Business Wire, Ice Cube is slated to executive produce the reimagined show alongside series creator Eric Fogel and his Cube Vision partner Jeff Kwatinetz.
The legendary rapper, who's gearing up to release his tenth studio album Everythang's Corrupt, will be producing the show via Cube Vision, as he also currently produces Hip Hop Squares for VH1.
In 2015, MTV2 announced a reboot of the series but MTV didn’t pick up the pilot.
“We’re excited to grow our partnership with Ice Cube and Cube Vision to reimagine this fan favorite,” President of MTV, VH1 and CMT Chris McCarthy said in a statement. “Deathmatch was the meme before memes, remains a hot topic on social media and will be a smart, funny way to tackle the over-the-top rhetoric of today’s pop culture where it belongs – in the wrestling ring.”
Cube added, “Happy to once again be working with Viacom and MTV on a fan favorite like Celebrity Deathmatch and to continue our success together.”
In the show — which originally premiered on MTV in 1998 and ran until 2002 — two clay caricatures of celebrities go up against one another in a wrestling ring.
The show will be available as a weekly series for an exclusive SVOD or premium broadcast partner in 2019. Cube will also lend his vocals to the show.
