Illa J Pays Tribute To Jay Dee On The Meditative New Cut "Never Left"

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

We mean it when we say we truly miss J Dilla ever day, but no man has the right to grieve the lost GOAT than his own brother, Illa J. Now, out of love and respect for his brother's sound and cultural impact, Illa has shared "Never Left," the latest single off of his upcoming self-titled album which features the MC rapping about Jay as if he were still here. "It's like you never left / You with me up in the booth / I see your silhouette" he spits, taking time to both properly praise J Dilla and berate those who abuse his work and legacy for personal gain. "They use big Dil when they need big deals," he chides. We know exactly what he means.

"Never Left" coasts on cooled-out, shuffling production courtesy of Canadian duo Potatohead People, who produced all of Illa J's upcoming record. Illa J will drop his new record October 2nd on Bastard Jazz. Listen to "Never Left" below and join us as all of us--family, friends and fans--raise it up for Jay Dee. Buy yourself a copy his other recent (and excellent) single, "Universe" via Bandcamp and get ready--we've got a good hunch his album is about to be a neck-breaker.
