Illa J Opens Up His Heart In The Tender New Video For "Universe"

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

A man of exceptional family ties and a Detroit legend in his own right, Illa J has just dropped his new video for "Universe," the gummy-smooth new single that had our heads nodding something wicked when it dropped earlier this summer. Featuring the signature interplanetary production sounds of Potatohead People and then loaded down with J's own vocal talents, the track sounds better than ever as it plays in the clip, accompanying a kind of love story that we can all find a bit familiar.

The new "Universe" clip was directed by Sixteen Pads and shows Illa pursuing a lovely woman across a variety of locales, undeterred by her chuckling rebuffs and determined to get her to open up. It ends with our hero getting seven simple digits and the chance to see her again--what more could young love hope for? "Universe" will appear on Illa J's upcoming self-titeld solo album, which was entirely produced by Potatohead People and is due out on October 2nd on Bastard Jazz. Their creative partnership was initially meant to be limited to one single, but blossomed into an entire LP's worth of material--and it's all on the way. Watch Illa's video for "Universe" below, and purchase the track on iTunes, if you haven't already done so.
