Now that The Fate of the Furious has been released, the most anticipated movie of the summer is easily Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the sequel to the 2014 breakout hit. It's already established that the movie, which was written and directed by James Gunn, is going to be a smash. So much so, executives are already thinking about the third movie.
Earlier today, James Gunn posted a lengthy message on his Facebook account, where he confirmed that he's coming back to the franchise to write and direct the third movie.
Now, the part that we found particularly interesting is this portion:
Much of what’s happened in the MCU for the past ten or so years has been leading, in a big way, to the Avengers’ Infinity War. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen after all that. It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond. I will be working side-by-side with Kevin Feige and the gang to help design where these stories go, and make sure the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe is as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far.
So basically, while we can expect a third Guardians of the Galaxy movie in the near future... it's not going to be for a while. We have Infinity War business to take care of first.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes out May 5th.
