Janelle Monáe, Amber Riley, Jennifer Hudson & More Shine Bright At Black Girls Rock 2013
Janelle Monae at "Black Girls Rock"
Black Girls Rock made a huge splash this year as Janelle Monáe, Amber Riley, Jennifer Hudson and a host of other performers tore down the stage for the inaugural event hosted by Regina King and Tracee Ellis Ross. This year's show honored Patti Labelle, Queen Latifah and Mara Brock-Akil amongst a host of others recognized for their excellence as leaders and agents of change. The women were celebrated in song as Alice Smith, Ledisi, Kelly Rowland and even Patti commanded the stage. The broadcast's musical guests set social media platforms ablaze last night as women around the world responded to their show-stopping performances at the New Jersey Center for the Performing Arts in Newark.
Black Girls Rock champions positive role models and healthy development for girls of color. The event founded by the legendary DJ Beverly Bond has been an annual event since its inaugural celebration in 2006. Black Girls Rock has grown in size and popularity since then, becoming a massive awards broadcast that has held its own against similar network events and established itself as unique and highly-anticipated vehicle for celebrating the achievements of women of color.
