Jermaine Dupri Says Celebrities Boycotting the Super Bowl Won't Work

“Boycotts and marches don’t seem like they work."

Super Bowl LIII will be taking place in Atlanta next year, so of course, ATL's very own Jermaine Dupri had some choice words on the occasion.

Jay-Z and Rihanna have reportedly turned down offers from the NFL for Super Bowl halftime shows, and more celebrities have aligned themselves with Colin Kaepernick and his efforts to bring awareness to the nation's social injustices. 

But Jermaine Dupri — who has agreed to partner with the NFL  by producing a week-long concert series ahead of the Super Bowl game on February 3rd—thinks boycotting the NFL isn't the most effective move.

“Boycotts and marches don’t seem like they work to me, I’m sorry,” he said in a video interview with TMZ. “I think they should send a message while they’re onstage; take advantage of your platform."

He added, "taking advantage of your platform is to not do the Super Bowl as well. But, it seems really interesting to me because we’re in an industry where you see so many people do things like boycott one year and the next year, they’re buddy-buddy with the thing they boycotted.”

He continued, “The more people speak on it, the more they talk about it, then the more people feel like it’s something they have to address... I feel like people ignore boycotts.”

Dupri also spoke on the 53rd Super Bowl will be taking place in his home city, saying, "Me, being the unofficial mayor of this city, but caring about the way people view my city, forever, I feel like it's my job to at least make sure that the 'Welcome to Atlanta' experience is the best that you ever have."
