We Will Not Forget: Jesse Williams Goes In On Police Brutality At The BET Awards

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

It all starts off normally. Jesse Williams, an actor most known for his role in the hit television show Grey’s Anatomy wins the Humanitarian Award. He thanks his parents, his mom and dad. He thanks his wife. He dedicates the award to activists and organizers. What happens next is usually drown out by classical music. Not this time. Williams says, "A system built to divide and impoverish and destroy us cannot stand if we do."

And it's gets really, really real after that. William proceeds to make a poignant, timely, and necessary speech addressing racism, police violence, the commodification of black bodies and cultural appropriation.

"Now, this is also in particular for the black women in particular who have spent their lifetimes dedicated to nurturing everyone before themselves. We can and will do better for you." Williams says raising the award.

Williams continues, "We've been looking at the data and we know that police somehow manage to deescalate, disarm, and not kill white people everyday. So what's gonna happen is we're gonna have equal rights and justice in our country or we will restructure their function and ours. I've got more ya'll."

And more there is. Listen to the speech in full for yourself below. And here is a transcript.
