"Jazz has been trapped" - Kamasi Washington Talks Kendrick & The Future Of Jazz w/ Charlie Rose
Throughout the last year, Kamasi Washington has emerged as something of a messianic figure in the world of jazz, anchored by his expansive debut, The Epic. But his close-up alone would hardly sum up just how unbelievably productive he's been both as a solo artist/composer and a helping hand in some of the year's most fulfilling projects, like Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly, Thundercat's The Beyond/Where The Giants Roam and more recently, Carlos Niño's forthcoming Flutes, Echoes, It’s All Happening! and the upcoming studio album from friend and frequent collaborator, Terrace Martin.
A recent interview with Charlie Rose found the modern jazz giant reflecting on his come-up, speaking to his Kendrick Lamar collaborations and plotting a trajectory for the jazz world as it continues to expand and push forward as a pillar of American music. Watch Kamasi Washington's full interview with Charlie Rose and in-studio performance below. Scroll down to peep his full slate of tour dates and grab your copy of The Epic on iTunes today.
