5 Clear Reasons Why Kanye West Deserves MTV's Video Vanguard Award
MTV has announced that the 2015 recipient of its Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, the most prestigious award it doles out for music video accomplishments, will be Kanye West. The honor will be bestowed upon West during the Awards show's live airing on Sunday, August 30th.
"Yeezus has more than earned this honor," MTV wrote, "after years of releasing groundbreaking music and accompanying videos that have always pushed the envelope. We would go so far as to assert that West's video work hasn't pushed the envelope--it's lit it ablaze time and time again. West will join the ranks of Beyoncé, LL Cool J, Justin Timberlake, Beastie Boys and Madonna (not to mention the award's King of Pop namesake) when he is given the official honors.
MTV shared a brief video announcing West's upcoming award, but it's our firm opinion that Yeezy's music videos should be left to speak for themselves. From his epic 35 minute Hype Williams-directed "Runaway" to the pure brilliant Evel Knievel-esque fun of "Touch The Sky." MTV stressed in their announcement that "some could argue that his videos are complete masterpieces in their own right." Okayplayer will be the first to make that argument, and we've arranged a sampling of what believe to be Kanye West's finest audio-visual achievements below. Scroll through and press play; whatever your thoughts on Kanye, you have to admit the man can make a damn fine video.
