Killer Mike Discuss His Musical Beginnings, Justice & Coachella On Snoop Dogg's GGN Newscast
It's good to know that when Killer Mike isn't calling out conservative pundits on their bullsh*t or penning brilliant op-eds in defense of Baltimore protestors, he's giving himself at least a little R&R time, kicking back with Snoop Dogg. The Run the Jewels MC took time to stop by the Doggfather's GGN real fake news program, during which he reminisced about getting his earliest start in music thanks to the Atlanta-bred generosity of Andre 3000 and Big Boi. Mike was college pals with one of Big's relatives, and via his deadly skills on the mic got the deal that would change his life.
Snoop, for his part, plays the part of the happy listener, but makes sure to ask Mike about the upcoming Meow the Jewels LP and how he and El-P came together to form the skull-kicking duo they are today.
It turns out, a Cartoon Network executive turned Mike on to El-P's open-ended, aggressive productions, asking him "How would you like to make the album you've always wanted to make?" That conversation led to R.A.P. Music and the first Run-the-Jewels run-in, a connection that Mike described as being a perfect, "Snoop & Dre" creative collision. Watch the entire episode below, which includes an analysis of Run the Jewels' "Close Your Eyes (And Count To Fuck)" video and the pride Mike felt after being named one of the crowd favorites at Coachella.
