Killer Mike Will Attend The White House Correspondents Dinner
The last twelve months have been meteoric for Killer Mike. The Atlanta MC has emerged as a vital public intellectual--channeling his hip-hop skills into eloquent social critiques. Mike took to CNN and Fox News in the wake of Michael Brown's killing in Ferguson, Missouri. He defended hip-hop's right to artistic freedom in the pages of USA Today, and right here on Okayplayer he reminded us all of Martin Luther King's revolutionary power. Amidst it all, Killer Mike also managed to release one of the very best albums of 2014. For free.
And now, the inevitable has happened: Mike is headed to the White House. The Washington Post reported yesterday that the MC will attend Saturday night's White House Correspondents Dinner as a guest of The Huffington Post. A yearly night of celebrity hobnobbing and carefully-vetted comedy, the Correspondents Dinner has been a yearly tradition since 1920 and offers both White House top brass and media members to crack jokes at each others' expense. Other musicians, including Ciara, Gladys Knight, Pete Wentz and Rob Thomas will attend this year's event, but it's safe to say all eyes will be on Killer Mike and his brilliant political mind. It's important to note that the MC is, at present, only a guest and will not be warming up the podium before Barack Obama hits the mic, but with so many cameras and reporters around it's a good bet that he'll make himself heard. We've always been the first to shout out "Killer Mike For President!"--and now at long last he's hitting 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
