"We had to hunt around to find it,” the businesswoman told WWD.

During its inception 20 years ago, Baby Phat was one of Phat Fashions’ most popular and profitable brands, valued at over $1 billion. Phat Fashion was later sold to Kellwood in 2004, Simmons Leissner served as creative director of Baby Phat from 2000 to 2010 before parting ways.

The line is set to relaunch for spring as a “mainstream sportswear” collection for millennials with “retro” and modernized elements.

"It’s perfect timing for this," she said. “Over the past several years, we realized the brand resonates with people and lives deep in their souls."

Daughter Ming Lee Simmons and Aoki Lee Simmons will be teaming up with their mother for the relaunch.

“It’s very important that you have women on both sides: women as the end user, women as the creator,” Simmons Leissner told Bloomberg TV. “We need to take more of that responsibility and own it.”

Ming Lee Simmons posted the announcement to her Instagram page, writing, "Celebrating #internationalwomensday with a very special announcement! Baby Phat has always been a brand for women. We have always celebrated every shape, every size, every race, every background; every woman. In 2019, we’re bringing it back for ALL of us."
