Lauryn Hill faces sentencing today in South Orange New Jersey on charges of tax evasion. The legendary artist and lead singer of The Fugees, who made her mark with the 1998 solo LP The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill, has faced increasing scrutiny over the years for the erratic behavior and mounting legal troubles that have begun to overshadow her massive talent. The singer could face up to one year in prison and $100,000.00 in fines on three counts of tax evasion, stemming from her failure to pay taxes on 1.8 million dollars in income earned between 2005 and 2007. Hill plead guilty to the charges last June. As if that were not enough, Hill is now saddled with an eviction lawsuit filed by her New Jersey landlord for failure to pay rent on her South Orange mansion. As Hill hit the road for a few dates this past year and made plans to head out on tour, things finally seemed to be looking up for her. Though many expressed concern over whether the singer could live up to the collective memory of L-Boogie in her prime, her fanbase was still buzzing with anticipation. With the latest string of setbacks, it seems that momentum may have effectively lost steam. Here's hoping this - however large - is just a bump in the road; an impediment she can ultimately overcome.
