"Hamilton" Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda To Host Saturday Night Live Tonight
Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway musical Hamilton became a cultural force over the past year and change, and tonight, the multitalented creator is appearing on another pillar of pop culture: Saturday Night Live.
Miranda, a New York City native, will join the other pop culture icons who have hosted SNL in the show's 41-year-history. Alec Baldwin, Richard Pryor, Drew Barrymore, Sofia Vergara, Justin Timberlake and others who have all appeared on the show as guest hosts, and tonight, Miranda becomes part of that legacy.
Hamilton used hip-hop and a multi-ethnic cast to tell the story of one of America's Founding Fathers. Since its January 2015 premiere, it has become the biggest Broadway musicals in recent memory, with shows sold out for months in advance. It earned a record-setting 16 Tony Award nominations, and took home 11 victories, one short of the record Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan set with their 2001 work The Producers. It also received the Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album, along with dozens of other awards.
As the show's creator, leading star, writer and director, Miranda has become a fixture of pop culture himself. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and appeared in a freestyle video with President Barack Obama.
With Manuel's diverse skill set, it'll be interesting to see which of his talents play into his appearance on Saturday Night Live. No matter what, we'll all be sure to keep an eye out on his performance when the show airs at 11:30 p.m. EST.
