M.I.A. Documentary Teaser Leaks, Taken Down By Roc Nation
M.I.A. documentary (teaser)
Quiet as kept, an M.I.A. documentary folowing the life of the agit-pop artist/Sri Lankan dancehall queen has apparently been in the works from director Steve Loveridge for some time now, meant to be released in time to coincide with Maya's new album Matangi--which is threatening to be a banger if the first three leak/releases ("Bad Girls"; "Bring The Noize" and "Only 1 4U"; respectively) are anything to go by. Loveridge leaked a teaser for the doc over the Independence Day weekend via his personal tumblr, which was promptly taken down by Roc Nation. The Roc emailed Loveridge to explain why, noting that the credits were not in order and "the timing of this leak is not good, as it screws with everything we've been working on setting up MATANGI...". We know all this because Loveridge posted a redacted version of the email on the tumblr, along with his reply:
"I really couldn't give a flying fuck. Count me out. Would rather die than work on this... nothing personal :)".
On Sunday, M.I.A. herself weighed in on the dispute, declaring via her twitter:
"im gonna need @kickstarter and my fans to help make this exsist , ive been black listed through normal channels !!!!!!!"
It would appear that social media again gives a highly visible artist the means to outmaneuver label fuckery as it happens--bringing the case directly to the people, as it were--so we may yet get the full doc in time for Matangi's release. On the other hand, the way advertising works (or doesn't work) in 2013, this whole thing maybe a marketing ploy dreamt up by Roc Nation to get the people to, you know, give a flying fuck. We do, as it happens (at least I do) so I'm just gonna go ahead and embed both vimeo and youtube links that are live currently in case the conspiracy is real! Watch below and get ready to fly your fucks.
