Madlib And MF DOOM Discuss Working w/ J Dilla, Madvillainy Sequel + More w/ 'Bonafide'

When two gawds of the craft sit down to talk shop, you better buckle down and listen (or read in this case.) Madlib recently landed himself on the cover of Bonafide and during the interview, got a surprise visit from another genius beat constructor in the mighty metal fingers AKA MF DOOMThe two legends opened up on their work with the GOAT (yes, even amongst these men) J Dilla and how he influenced and was himself influenced by the legendary company he kept, trading crates and hitting strip clubs even while bed-ridder.

No doubt a soar subject, Lib speaks on the connection he had with his "musical cousin;" where words were overkill and mere glances and grunts were all the two needed to let one another know that they were feeling whatever it was they working on at the time. Lib and DOOM speak to their own collaborative project Madvillainy and respective stylings (both of them championing that rugged and raw drum and sample sequencing) as well as keeping us on the edge of our seats for that sequel, claiming "we got some songs." It's a short one, but whenever the reclusive beat conductors step out of the woodworks to drop a line, you better listen. Head down below for some compelling snippets from the interview and head over to Bonafide for the full script.

MF DOOM on the status of Madvillainy 2 :

"It’s the follow up, without over thinking it though, it’s a continuation, ain’t gotta’ be better or worse. Where y’all last left off at, next episode. We got a lot of songs done. Two or three more songs and it’s wrapped up."

Madlib on a potential sequel to Jaylib :

"We’d started on the second one before he (Dilla) died. I was hanging out with him even when he was sick, just beat digging or whatever, take him around and go to clubs and stuff. He had all types of stuff, I don’t know if it’ll (the music will) come out but he had all different types of stuff, like we all do."

Madlib and DOOM on working with J Dilla :

M: "We were musical cousins, like-minded. We weren’t telling each other what to do, (we were) probably drinking and hanging out (laughs)."

D: "Like ‘yo’ you got a blunt?’ (laughs) It’s almost like telepathy was going on when we’re doing a record, it’s natural."
