Many of us assumed that when Mary J. Bilge was compelled to burst out into a rendition of Bruce Springsteen's "American Skin" while interviewing presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, she'd just caught some socially-conscious form of the spirit. It was an insanely awkward moment, but it's sentiment did not go over any heads. The song was one dedicated to/inspired by the memory of Amadou Diallo, a 23-year-old Bronx man that was killed by four NYPD officers in 1999, all acquitted of their second-degree murder charges; a painfully familiar thread.
But it turns out that MJB has actually recorded a cover of the song and today it arrives as the first single off a still untitled new project with a little help from Kendrick Lamar. You can hear the track down below, but if you're looking to catch Mary J. Blogs in-the-flesh in the months ahead, refer to her joint tour dates with Maxwell just beneath the player.
