Meshell Ndegeocello Will Take Harlem To Church With James Baldwin-Inspired Theater Piece
Next Wednesday, December 7th, HarlemStage will begin a two-week run of Can I Get a Witness: The Gospel Of James Baldwin; a theater piece concocted by the brilliantly undefinable, Meshell Ndegeocello. The show will be presented as a church service, where rhythm, word, dance and text will celebrate one of literature's greatest cultural critics, specifically inspired by Baldwin's The Fire Next Time.
Can I Get A Witness stars Toshi Reagon, Paul J. Thompson, Staceyann Chin and Justin Hicks. It hits HarlemStage at 7:30pm each night between December 7th and December 11th, with matinees at 2:30pm on both Saturday and Sunday. NYC mainstays, Jake Sherman, Jebin Bruni and Abraham Rounds are set to perform the musical component to the piece. Can I Get A Witness will also mark Ndegeocello's second scoring role of the year on the heals of Ava DuVernay's Queen Sugar, which is already gathering heaps of critical and pedestrian acclaim ahead of awards season.
