Visual Culture: Milk Gallery Presents Enjoy The Experience
Milk Gallery presents Enjoy The Experience: Homemade Records 1958 - 1992 - a massive exhibition of vinyl cover art culled from records self-published between the late-50s and the early 90s. Boo-Hooray and Milk have teamed with Sinecure Books to present the musically driven installation based upon the groundbreaking coffee table book from Sinecure, touted by many as the best of its kind. The artwork spotlights albums that have existed largely under the radar since their respective release dates decades ago, garnering what little attention and praise they did receive from the family members and close friends of the artists producing them. The interactive exhibit pays tribute to the oft-ignored media and music makers of bygone eras with an interactive exhibit that picks up where the book leaves off by incorporating the music compiled by the publishers into the installation with a needle-drop listening station that will allow visitors to select and listen to records contained in the text. There are also DJ sets and exclusive performances scheduled for the duration of the exhibit, which houses a collection of tunes representative of the American experience across the later part of the 20th century that are reportedly funkier than the mainstream counterparts of their respective eras. Copies of Enjoy The Experience will be available for sale at the exhibit along with the accompanying 20-track double-LP and 24-track double-CD. The New York exhibit runs from July 9th to the 23rd. Enjoy The Experience will show elsewhere this summer at Amoeba in Los Angeles and Collette in Paris. Check the sounds below for a taste of what awaits you at Milk Gallery.
