In 2014, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B aired on Lifetime and received negative reviews. Aaliyah's family was not involved in the project and producers reportedly relied on the biography Aaliyah: More than a Woman by Christopher John Farley. Zendaya had originally been cast to play the singer but backed out after the family's public disapproval of the project. Alexandra Shipp took on the role and the biopic became the network it's highest-rated TV film of that year.
Missy also spoke on wanting to make a biopic of her own life and career as well. She also talked about the importance of winning the VMA Vanguard award this year.
