Mixtape Monday: Datu Kayumanggi, MekDot, Mona Lisa, EDICA + More

Representing lovely for the brown chiefs, L.A. based hip-hop outfit Datu Kayumanggi dives headfirst into a deep well of Filipino heritage on their debut Live At The Pie Vol. 1 mixtape, recorded and mixed by Nels Jensen at The Pie Studios. Channeling the Soulquarians as easily as they vamp on funky chords and foundational jazz, the crew piloted by MC Art of Verse and keyboardist DanMichael Reyes delivers a haunting and beautiful ode to the immigrant experience at a pivotal and politically fraught time in American history. ILLSTRTD - #throwbacktothe90s Mixtape
Melbourne based producer ILLSTRTD pays tribute to the post-New Jack 90s with the 4-track #throwbacktothe90s mixtape, featuring his reworks of “four seminal r&b tracks taken from the decade.” Illstrtd puts his distinctive touch on Blackstreet’s “No Diggity,” TLC’s “No Scrubs, Janet Jackson’s “Love Will Never Do,” and Ginuwine’s “Pony.” His reverence for the genre is the common thread that connects these joints, which all get a fresh future beats makeover that should speak to lovers of r&b, electronic and dance.

In the second of two mixes from MekDot, the 2DBZ co-founder compiles a crash course on Kendrick Lamar’s "The Heart" tracks to commemorate the fourth installment in the ongoing single series from K.Dot. The “quickstrike mix” includes not only Kendrick’s recordings, but the tracks they sampled. Though this is a small bite at 21 minutes, it should be a given that the mix packs a powerful punch when you consider the source.
